Rare pair of wood carved panels designed by Evelyn Ackerman for Panelcarve.

 

This particular pair are called ‘Evie’s Birds’ and to this day there is still one of these panels on the door of the San Diego Zoo. They were part of the Panelcarve series of redwood wall sculptures. A frame has been added for a finished effect panels are stamped Panelcarve on the reverse sides.

 

Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman teamed together to help create the "California Modern" movement of the 1950s.  Jerome Ackerman (born 1920) and Evelyn

Ackerman (née Lipton) (1924-2012) are American industrial designers who as a team made contributions to the aesthetic of California mid-century modern with their ceramics, wood carvings, mosaics, textiles, and enamels in home furnishings and architectural elements.The Ackermans sold their products through their companies Jenev and ERA Industries. Evelyn was an accomplished artist and an Juthor of books on antique toys and dolls.
